Mannequin: Professional sex doll or more tease?
Sex dolls have been featured in television shows and films in the past. Sometimes the performances are creative, sensitive, even a little funny. Lars And The Real Girl with Ryan Gosling is an example of this. Now, someone has decided to center an entire sitcom around a sex doll. The show is Dummy and stars Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, Scott Pilgrim, Trolls) alongside Donal Logue (Gotham, Sons of Anarchy, The Patriot).
Plot summary
In the series, Cody (Kendrick) discovers that his boyfriend (Logue) has a sex doll. Predictably, she's pretty upset about this at first. However, before long she warms up to the doll and an unlikely friendship forms. Yes, the sex doll talks to her. Prepare to suspend your disbelief.
Presumably this will be a short-term series. The show runs on Quibi, a new network known for producing shows made specifically for mobile screens. The episodes here are also exceptionally short. Dummy clocks in at about six minutes per episode.
What are the advantages of mannequins
First and foremost, we love that every character here is three-dimensional. Yes, Dan owns a sex doll, but he has never been portrayed as bizarre or deviant. We're also happy to see a couple incorporating sex dolls into their relationship in a pretty healthy way.
Sex doll acceptance aside, the writing here is well done. Both stars have comedic performances and it shows. The episodes are fast-paced and the audience ends up wanting more. Dummy manages to be clever without getting caught up in the predictability of crappy sex doll jokes.
Plus, we love watching any show that breaks the rules. When most series are little more than reality shows regurgitating or exploiting old ideas, it's nice to see something truly unique. Replacing the usual romance with a successful but neurotic woman and a sex doll best sees a creative twist on the "partner comedy" trope.
Is there anything bad?
We have to be honest. There's nothing here to win an Emmy. Nor is it a show that will spur serious social change. The show is also self-indulgent for creator Cody Heller, as it's a fictionalized version of his relationship with Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon. The show also offers a humorous take on several serious topics. Some viewers may feel uncomfortable with this. However, the show is creative, entertaining and unique. Overall, we think it's worth a look.
Why should sex doll fans care?
We are acutely aware that men and women who enjoy using sex dolls are often grossly mischaracterized and mistreated. For this reason, we are always interested in the creative works of any subversive misunderstanding of dolls. In this case, we see the acceptance, humor, and creative writing of sex dolls. Hopefully this will encourage anyone who is reluctant to purchase a custom sex doll to make a purchase! We think it's worth a try. In fact, we wish there were more positive aspects of sex dolls. Of course we would love to hear any suggestions from our customers.
